Then apparently every Tahitian’s, Saturday’s night hangover wore off all at once and instantly we were surrounded with a pack of flailing, spazzing boogieboarders (the real scourge of Tahiti, apparently they haven’t got the memo here that you should start surfing when you grow up and leave the boogie for kids), a bunch of local surfers and now with a solid pack out in the surf, I was over it….
Jamaican Mike, who is by now an honorary “Natty M” crewmember, had a special, special gift for us. I’m not talking about his West Indian/Caribbean tooth suck sound, that Dom had been missing and brought me back to warm Caribbean memories; Even though what usually follows after the tooth sucking sound is never good news nor a kind reply, but sass.

End of the Fun Times
February 27th, 2009 · 4 Comments
It became apparent the good times can’t roll on forever and for a majority of the “Natty M” boys it came to a screeching halt. This abruptly occurred the morning after our great full moon surf session at Taapuna. Everyone except Kahlil and Tina woke up the next morning feeling like absolute crap and it [...]

Fun Times and Even Funner Times

Preparing to finally leave French Polynesia, we spent a few days on the dock of Marina Taina, our adopted Tahitian neighborhood by now. I still wander around at night looking for P Kiddy every time we are here. Its chalked full of cruising boats from multitudes of countries, cruising families, mega yachts with crews just [...]

“Bienvenue a Tahiti”
January 31st, 2009 · 7 Comments
Not to mention the obvious but a large motivator was to surf these waves that had for so long seemed out of reach but soooooooooo very tempting .
Since arriving here in Tahiti it has been a non stop string of “Firsts”…. The olas (waves) here have proven to be beautiful and as perfect as they seem when staring at them dreamingly from within the pages of a surf mag. Requiring a lot of fear swallowing and narrow escapes but, not to sound like a surfer dude cliché!, once you are rewarded with one Tahitian barrel you can’t help but want many many many more!!!

Illegal Mexican Immigration a Problem for Tahiti

Swells hit the top shelf straight on and you sit inside there, too deep on the reef to ever feel comfortable, then chuck yourself over the appearing ledge, behind the bowl, as water just drains off the now dry reef, this usually involves a grabbing airdrop on your backhand, landing just feet from the dry coral, as the bulk of the wave hits a corner pocket of reef, jacks up and the wave just bends 90? and heaves a perfect, thick bubble and spits you out, every time, like a mini Teahupoo…. No one’s around, its mean, pumping with double overhead sets greeting us and we’re hesitantly out there, triple checking the dink anchor, as the current out the pass is like an angry river, complete with rapids, as the lagoon tries to empty all the excess water out of the 25 foot wide, very narrow opening, as the new swell surges huge volumes of water over barrier reef.
No need to paddle out, the current sucks you right to the peak, as I watch Kahlil airdrop, to a tube smack down pummeling on his first attempt.

A “Natty M” New Year
January 8th, 2009 · 13 Comments
Her reef scratched rudder is repaired, a new rain proof tarp/awning keeps us and the back seating area dry during torrential tropical downpours, a custom crafted sun shade/awning can cover the foredeck trampolines if we desire refreshing shade, the freezer is frozen again, all the ships lights have been switched to energy efficient LEDs, our bowsprit stays shortened and respliced to get more headstay tension on the screecher, Windyspins (our wind generator) lubed up, oils changed, every surfboard ding fixed (that didn’t last too long), 70 meters or 210 feet of shiny, new 12mm anchor chain, attached to a new 10 pound heavier and better setting 30Kg Brugel anchor (a German made anchor the best I have ever used, in sand it resets in place when winds shift 180?), a new mast gooseneck Delrin washer machined for the boom, the mast track and mainsail cars fixed, and countless nuts, bolts and rivets redone and relubed…. It was magical for both of us, as Tina had never had a professional massage, nor a real shower since setting foot aboard “Natty M” four months ago, and I think the last time I enjoyed a real shower was back in Santa Barbara when I last visited, 10 months ago. I don’t know about you, but I have been to my share of spas in nice hotels around the world, as I like massages for my active body, but never as a couple and I have to say, spas are way better and super fun when you go with you girlfriend or significant other and pamper yourselves together.

Merry Christmas a Day Late
December 26th, 2008 · 10 Comments
Team Natural Mystic spent the last week and Christmas over in Morea, with perfect weather, wind and waves. Santa showed up driving a speed boat, but aside from a few Christmas lights here and there, that was the only sign of Christmas time, as the tropical weather definitely doesn’t reflect a winter wonderland. We wish [...]

Aidez nous à Trouver Notre Chat, Nous I’aimons! (Help Us Find Our Cat, We Love Him)
December 4th, 2008 · 32 Comments
Everyone we have met in Tahiti has been, so helpful and most people know about us and our search before we even meet them, as Tahiti is an island, everyone knows each-other and our reward of 200.000F is over $2,000 dollars US. Most don’t want the money just want to help and the young drug dealing type males who just laugh at you when you show them the flier, instantly change their turn when they find out how much the reward is, then want the flier and want to find the furball too…. We came to the dock in the first place to repair our port rudder we scratched on a reef in the Tumatous and one side of our boat is rudderless, getting this done is all the more urgent, as the first cyclonic system of the season has formed a little to our west and we need to be able to leave if a hurricane is headed this way, as we are well into official cyclone season here by a month now, and have no insurance should one decimate Tahiti (our insurance company excludes coverage for named or numbered windstorms if south of 10S.
