Rants from a Galapagonian Rambler

July 21st, 2008 · 5 Comments

The other day these hooligans came buzzing into our line-up with their flashy, red dinghy and crazed mullet-yielding surf militia. Some scrappy, Cali-kid proceeded to paddle into every choice wave and a chinstrapped “ginger” photographer talked trash from the peanut gallery. I’m all for sharing, I mean this place has empty waves around every corner so it’s usually no big deal. Well, I’m beginning to wonder about this crew. Is that really legal; towing into the triple overhead sets on the outer reef? How did you get your tripoded HDV camera in here when I got my point-&-shoot taken away? Do you really have to take clubs full of people back to your party? Aren’t you supposed to be somewhere else and weren’t you supposed to leave yesterday? The day in the life of these guys makes me sick: They surf two sessions a day, breaking only to eat and play with their aquatic pets. Every night they’re at the “Chicken Cart” throwing back rice, beans and all the meat they’ll dish-out. Then it’s off to Polo’sor Iguana Rock to see what the night will bring. Is that all you do? Is there any merit in that? Even the wildlife here makes an artistic contribution. The boobies and pelicans leave the most inspiring rock paintings on the shoreline.  What is the Natural Mystic contributing to the Galapagos? I hear rumors of a thought-provoking documentary being filmed but I shutter to think of what this “film” will be like. I picture something like; National Lampoon’s Sailing Vacation. That’s just what the world needs, thanks guys. -Hippy Hater

Ben, the shots are OUTSTANDING! And your post made me smile… I just can’t quite guess who it is who’s tongue-in-cheek cranky. Our family news: I’m adjusting to my new job (ugh), Pa’s been taking some killer close-ups of flowers and such, Eric had a great mission trip to Mexico and may be moving in with a guy who just bought the house across the street & has a room to rent out. Keep up the great work! And may you get the very most out of this remarkable experience. Love you lots! -Mom

Thanx Mom. The third person narrative was a experiment for me. I was trying to summarize some local animosity that comes our way occasionally from port to port. Everyone loves us and we’re respectful an all, but you know, “haters want to hate” like that Dave guy.

Ben!!! (And the rest of Natural Mystic, you know I only have love for all of you)–
Soooo I have been meaning to write since I left you and the boat however many weeks ago, but then I started traveling around Ecuador, meeting the locals, drinking it up…you know how it goes. At least I joined your facebook group! I went swimming in the ocean every night last week but it just wasn’t the same as jumping off the boat in K’s shirt after two bottles of rum.
Anyway, looks like you guys are doing exactly what you were doing when I left you and I couldn’t be more jealous. I am headed back to ‘Muricuh on Sunday to landlocked Chicago, so say goodbye to the turtles and sea lions for me.
Hope you like it when I’m bored at school, read through all your archives and then comment on every entry. Oh, and give my love to P Kitty!
