Final Weather For Thursday Departure

December 26th, 2007 · 1 Comment

We have gotten the green light from our weather forecaster and Gulf Stream Expert and all systems are currently go for a Thursday departure for Tortola, BVI’s. This is a 1500 NM trip and should take any where from a week to 10 days. I will post Dane Clark’s latest forecast and let’s hope this one turns out better than the last…..

“FINAL WEATHER FOR KYBER LOGUE
HAMPTON TO TORTOLA
DEPARTING DECEMBER 27, 2007

WEATHER OUTLOOK:

LOOKS LIKE A FAIR TO GOOD WEATHER WINDOW FOR YOUR TRIP TO
TORTOLA. A STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVING NORTHEAST AWAY FROM THE EAST COAST TOMORROW WILL RESULT IN NORTHWEST TO WEST WINDS THAT WILL DECREASE DURING THE DAY. SEAS MAY STILL BE ROUGH IN THE MORNING SINCE THERE HAVE BEEN WIND GUSTS TO 50 KTS THIS AFTERNOON JUST OFFSHORE FROM YOUR LOCATION. BY AFTERNOON TOMORROW, WINDS ARE FORECAST 15 KTS OR LESS FROM A WESTERLY DIRECTION AND SEAS SHOULD BE LAYING DOWN WITH SOME MODERATE SWELLS STILL PRESENT UNTIL FRIDAY. I WOULD RECOMMEND DEPARTING AFTER NOON TOMORROW.

FORECASTS ON FRIDAY SHOW LIGHT NORTH TO NORTHEAST WINDS AS HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS OVER THE NORTH CAROLINA COASTAL WATERS. THESE LIGHT WINDS ARE FORECAST TO CLOCK TO EAST AND SOUTHEAST DURING THE DAY AND PICK UP IN SPEEDS FROM A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION DURING THE EVENING. NO STRONG WINDS OR ROUGH SEAS ARE FORECAST FOR YOUR GULFSTREAM CROSSING AT THIS TIME ASSUMING YOU CROSS DURING THE DAY FRIDAY.

WINDS ARE FORECAST TO CLOCK SOUTHWESTERLY SATURDAY AND INCREASE IN SPEEDS. SUNDAY SOUTHWEST TO WEST WINDS SHOULD BE SLOWLY DECREASING AS YOU MAKE YOUR WAY DOWN AND THROUGH THE SUBTROPICAL HIGH PRESSURE RIDGELINE SOUTH OF BERMUDA. LIGHT SOUTHERLY WINDS WILL GIVE WAY TO SOUTHEAST DURING THE DAY MONDAY AS YOU GET SOUTH OF THE HIGH PRESSURE AREA. THE LAST TWO DAYS YOU SHOULD SEE LIGHT TO MODERATE EASTERLY TRADE WINDS WITH LIGHT SHOWERS POSSIBLE.

NOTE: JENIFER HAS GIVEN YOU TWO ROUTES THAT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FAVORABLE OCEAN CURRENTS. YOU WILL NEED TO DECIDE WHICH ROUTE TO FOLLOW BEFORE YOU CROSS THE GULFSTREAM. THE EASTERN ROUTE IS THE MORE TRADITIONAL ROUTE MOST MARINERS TAKE FROM THE EAST COAST TO TORTOLA; OUT TO THE EAST TO A POINT A COUPLE OF HUNDRED MILES SOUTH OF BERMUDA AND THEN SOUTH TO THE ISLANDS “REACHING” ON THE EASTERLY TRADES. WITH A COUPLE OF DAYS OF SOUTHWEST WINDS FORECAST AFTER YOU CROSS THE GULFSTREAM, THIS APPROACH MAY WELL BE THE BEST, ALTHOUGH IT DOES APPEAR THAT YOU MAY ENCOUNTER A DAY OR SO OF LIGHT SOUTHERLIES BEFORE YOU REACH THE EASTERLY TRADES, WHICH LOOK LIGHT AT THIS TIME.

CALL OR E-MAIL IF YOU NEED UPDATES ENROUTE.

FORECASTS FOR YOUR EXPECTED POSTIONS:

12/27 – WINDS NORTHWEST TO WEST 14-20 KTS. SEAS 5-8 FEET. WINDS BECOMING MOSTLY WESTERLY WITH WINDS AND SEAS DIMINISHING DURING THE DAY AND EVENING. SWELLS WILL SLOWLY SUBSIDE. IN THE AFTERNOON WINDS WESTERLY 10-16 KTS. SEAS 4-6 FEET MOSTLY IN NORTHERLY SWELLS.

12/28 – WINDS LIGHT NORTH TO NORTHEAST 7-13 KTS. SES 3-5 FEET
BECOMING EAST AND SOUTHEAST 10-15 KTS IN THE AFTERNOON. BY EVENING WINDS BECOMING SOUTHERLY 15-22 KTS. SEAS 4-7 FEET

12/29 – WINDS SOUTH SOUTHWEST 20-25 KTS WITH SEAS 6-9 FEET. SHOWERS POSSIBLE. WINDS BECOMING SOUTHWEST LATE AND SLOWLY DECREASING,

12/30 – WINDS SOUTHWEST TO WEST 14-22 KTS. SEAS 5-8 FEET. WINDS DECREASING TO 10-15 KTS LATE WITH SEAS DECREASING.

12/31 – WINDS SOUTHERLY 12-17 KTS. SEAS 3-5 FEET.

1/1 – WINDS SOUTHEAST TO EAST 10-15 KTS. SEAS 3-4 FEET. WINDS BECOMING 14-20 KTS LATE WITH SEAS SLOWLY BUILDING.

1/2 – WINDS EASTERLY 14-22 KTS. SEAS 4-7 FEET.

1/3 – WINDS EASTERLY 13-20 KTS. SEAS 3-6 FEET

NO TROPICAL WEATHER FORECAST AT THIS TIME.”

So there you have it, with any luck and some more hard work we will hopefully arrive sometime after the New Year in a new place, foreign to all of us and a little warmer than Hampton, VA and a hell of a lot warmer than Newport, RI. We wish you all the best in the New Year and I have got our Iridium Sat phone set up to send our blog SMS messages so we can leave short messages as to our progress. Peace – Kyber.
